Arsenal transfers: ‘Gunners must sign defensive reinforcements’
Arsenal transfers: Tony Adams urges Gunners to spend big during the summer and bolster their defensive options
Tony Adams has urged Arsenal to spend big during the summer transfer window to boost the Gunners’ chances of ending their trophy drought next season.
Arsene Wenger’s men just pipped Tottenham to a fourth-place finish and qualification for next season’s Champions League after a dramatic final day of the campaign.
But former Arsenal captain Adams believes that Wenger must strengthen his back four during the summer if the north Londoners are to challenge for major honours next term.
“The best players and the best teams win championships,” Adams told Sky Sports.
“Lately Arsenal have become very solid – Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker have gained a confidence together, but defensively I think they are still short – I’d like to see them sign another centre-back, a couple of full-backs and possibly a keeper.”
Arsenal have not lifted a major trophy since their victory over Manchester United in the FA Cup final back in 2005.
And Adams added: “The fans are desperate for a trophy of some sort.
“I would like the players to get used to winning; if you have never had that experience of crossing the line as a winner you don’t know what it is like to be a winner.”
