Arsenal transfers: ‘Gunners need to buy more English players’
Arsenal transfers: Robert Pires believes Gunners need to bring in more English players if they are to push on next term
Robert Pires believes Arsenal need to bring in more English players if they are to build on their fourth-place finish next season.
Former Gunners midfielder Pires played alongside the likes of Sol Campbell, Ashley Cole, Martin Keown and Ray Parlour during his time at Highbury between 2000 and 2006.
And the ex-France international believes Arsene Wenger should consider signing more English players this summer.
“Wenger built Arsenal so he is very important to the players and needs to stay,” Pires, 39, told Sky Sports.
“In my opinion I think Arsenal need to buy English players. Wenger has changed the philosophy at the club, he brought in young players like Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Aaron Ramsey.
“These players are very good for the future but now they need to buy some players with experience to give a good mix.”
Pires scored 84 goals in 284 appearances for the Gunners, winning two Premier League titles and two FA Cups.
