Frank Lampard could not hide his delight after firing Chelsea to victory at Aston Villa and becoming the club’s all-time leading goal-scorer.

Christian Benteke had put Villa ahead with a solid finish in the 14th minute before Chelsea’s Ramires was sent off just before half-time for a foul on Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Benteke was then sent off in the 58th minute, and Lampard equalised with a superb left-footed strike to equal Bobby Tambling’s record of 202 goals for the Blues.

The 34-year-old midfielder then had the final say when he tapped home Eden Hazard’s low pass to take his tally to 203 for the west Londoners.

“It means everything to me, it’s amazing,” Lampard told Sky Sports. “The support I’ve had from my team-mates, like you saw at the end, I’m thankful to every single one of them. They’re the ones who put it on a plate for me sometimes.

“The fans have been willing me to do it for a long time and were probably getting frustrated alongside me not getting there. I’m just delighted.

“Bobby Tambling is a great man, he’s not been well lately, and I was pleased to level but I didn’t want to overcook that celebration out of respect for him. But to then go and break it… I was delighted.

“I’ve been here [at Chelsea] a long time. I lost my mum a few years ago and she was my biggest support. It [the second celebration] was for her.”

The win all but guarantees a top-four finish for Chelsea and a place in next season’s Champions League, with the Blues now third in the table and four points ahead of Arsenal.

And Lampard added: “It’s huge for the team. We wanted to put it to bed today, it was a very tough game but we knew that [it was going to be]. We showed great character to keep going in the game and get a result.

Lampard’s future is still unclear, with the midfielder yet to be offered a new deal and his current contract set to expire in the summer.

And when asked if he hopes to add to his goals tally next season, Lampard replied: “I hope so.”
