Paul Lambert was convinced his Aston Villa side deserved to beat Chelsea after watching the Blues come from behind to seal victory as both sides were reduced to 10 men.

Christian Benteke fired Villa into the lead in the 14th minute and Chelsea’s Ramires was shown a red card just before half-time after a foul on Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Benteke was then given his marching orders after clashing with John Terry and Frank Lampard hauled the visitors back level on the hour-mark.

Lampard then wrapped up the win for the west Londoners when he tapped home from close range in the 88th minute to become Chelsea’s all-time leading goal-scorer.

But Lambert, whose side remain on 40 points and 13th in the table, questioned some of the decisions of referee Lee Mason and thought John Terry should have been punished for a foul on Yacouba Sylla.

“We should have won the game,” Lambert told BBC Sport.

“I thought we looked great and played good football, we had a good tempo. Some of the decisions today were bizarre. The referee missed the John Terry one, he’s taken down Yacouba Sylla. You’ve got to be big enough to make that decision.

“We were so far in control of that game. We didn’t deserve that – we were excellent.

“I thought we should have had a penalty. There were so many decisions that were poor.”

Villa travel to Wigan Athletic in their final Premier League game next Sunday.
