Barcelona 0 Bayern Munich 3: Rosell congratulates ‘worthy winners’
Barcelona 0 Bayern Munich 3: Sandro Rosell declares his belief that Bundesliga side are the best team in Europe after thumping defeat
Barcelona president Sandro Rosell declared his belief that Bayern Munich are the strongest team in Europe after the Bundesliga side reached the Champions League final with an emphatic victory at Camp Nou.
It was always going to be an uphill struggle for Barcelona after their 4-0 defeat in Germany in last week’s first leg, but a difficult task was made nearly impossible due to the absence of Lionel Messi, who was an unused substitute.
Arjen Robben opened the scoring just after half-time with a close-range finish and Gerard Pique inadvertently turned Franck Ribery’s cross home to make it 2-0 on the night.
Thomas Mueller then headed home in the 76th minute to wrap up an emphatic 7-0 aggregate victory and set up an all-Germany final showdown against Borussia Dormund at Wembley on 25 May.
“I think that Bayern are currently the strongest team in Europe and that they will win the final, although in football you never know,” said Rosell.
“I don’t think that Spanish teams did all that badly in the competition this season. Now we must wait for next season and see what happens.
“I would like to congratulate Bayern because they were clearly better than us and deserve to be in the final.
“We lost the tie in Munich. Obviously Lionel Messi’s absence was felt but the rest of the players stood up to the challenge. I am proud of the squad, the technical staff and the fans.”
And midfielder Xavi echoed Rosell’s sentiments. He said: “Right now, they [Bayern] are playing at an extraordinary high level. We went into these matches with injury problems but they were better than us and are deserved finalists.”
