Arjen Robben struggled find the words to describe his emotions after firing Bayern Munich to Champions League glory in a dramatic victory over Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund.

After a goalless first half, Mario Mandzukic put Bayern ahead at Wembley on the hour-mark when he tapped home Robben’s low cross.

Dortmund equalised seven minutes later when Ilkay Gundogan fired in his penalty following Dante’s foul on Marco Reus.

However, Robben stole late on and tucked his shot past Roman Weidenfeller to secure victory and end the Bundesliga club’s 14-year wait for Europe’s top prize.

“I can’t put it into words,” said Robben, who was a losing finalist with Bayern in 2010 and 2012. “I have so many emotions.

“Last year was such a disappointment and in the last four years we’ve been to three finals – it needed to happen! But we still had to do it.

“My whole career went through my mind when I scored, it is such a special feeling you can’t describe it.

“You don’t want to be a loser every time, coming always in second place. We deserved to win it. I have dreamt about it many times. Everybody I spoke to before the game said it was our night and I had a great feeling.

“We knew after last season what needed to be done to improve and that is what we did. We are already going into the history books but now we can win the treble.”

Bayern coach Jupp Heyncke, who is to be replaced by Pep Guardiola this summer, admitted his side were second best in the early stages in London.

“We didn’t get into the game in the first half so I corrected a few things at the interval,” said Heyncke.

“There was pressure on both teams but we certainly felt the burden of being favourites in the first 20 minutes.”
