Brendan Rodgers says the door is always open for Jamie Carragher to return to Liverpool as a coach in the future.

The 35-year-old centre-half will call time on his career after the club’s final Premier League game against Queens Park Rangers at Anfield on Sunday.

Carragher struggled to hold down a first-team place at the start of the campaign before becoming a regular in 2013, with his experience proving a vital commodity.

And Rodgers admitted he would be interested in working with the former England international in the future.

“At this moment in time, coaching is not in his thinking but in the future, I’d love the opportunity to work with him as a coach at some stage,” Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo.

“I think he has so much to offer on the coaching side. We have left it open ended. He’s someone I will keep in touch with. He’s not going to go away and that’s it. The door is always open.”

Rodgers also urged his Liverpool squad to mark a special day and finish the season with a victory in Carragher’s honour.

“We are marking the end of an authentic legend,” Rodgers added.

“Jamie is a truly remarkable man and football player. It’s been a real privilege to have worked with him.

“He’s someone I will miss as he’s a wonderful influence in the dressing room and on the field. The team talk will be very simple – we want Jamie to go out on a high and finish the season with a win.

“There is sadness with it but Sunday is a day to celebrate his career.”
