Rafael Benítez admitted his frustration at Chelsea’s failure to put the game beyond Tottenham after watching his side be twice pegged back by Spurs.

Oscar had nodded the Blues into an early lead at Stamford Bridge but Emmanuel Adebayor’s superb curling shot restored parity.

Ramires then struck before half-time to hand the home side the advantage but substitute Gylfi Sigurdsson once again hauled Spurs back level with 10 minutes to play to rescue a point.

“We had four or five counter-attacks to finish the game and we didn’t do it,” the Chelsea interim boss told Sky Sports.

“They were pushing and pushing – we had to defend, but we had the chances on the counter-attack to score the third goal and finish it.

“We could have defended both goals a little bit better. Adebayor was offside [for Tottenham’s second] but we should have stayed more compact and more aggressive in defence.

“The second half was too open for my liking. In the first half we had control of the game but we gave them the opportunity to play on the counter.

“When we were winning the game we should have had more control. We didn’t finish our counter-attacks and that that was a big difference.

“To be fair, maybe a draw was the right result. We had chances to score a third, we didn’t do it and credit to Tottenham because they were pushing and attacking.”

The draw keeps Chelsea in third place in the Premier League table and one more win will guarantee a top-four finish for the west Londoners.

And the Spaniard, whose travel to Aston Villa on Saturday, added: “We have to win one game to guarantee the top four – we’ll try to win both to be in the top three.”
