Rafael Benítez insists Chelsea do not have a special plan to keep Gareth Bale quiet when Tottenham travel to Stamford Bridge
Rafael Benítez insists Chelsea do not have a special plan to keep Gareth Bale quiet when Tottenham travel to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.
PFA player of the year Bale has been in stunning form for the north Londoners this season, scoring a number of crucial goals, including Spurs’ late winner against Southampton on Saturday.
But Benítez says that his Blues side, who can all but secure their spot in next season’s Champions League with victory against their London rivals, will not deploy a specific plan to keep the 23-year-old at bay.
“No,” said Benítez when asked if he has a special plan to stop Bale. “I think that we’ll play way that we play.
“We have a good team with good players. Obviously we’ll have to keep an eye on him but they’ll have to keep an eye on [Juan] Mata or [Eden] Hazard or any other of our players.”
The Spaniard added: “He’s having a great season and is scoring a lot of crucial goals for them. We know that he is playing in different positions and he’s doing well in all of them. He’s a really good player.”
Chelsea face Benfica in the Europa League final in Amsterdam next Wednesday and Benítez admits that it would be a boost to wrap up a top-four finish before the showpiece.
“It could be important for us,” he continued. “If you have the qualification done you can concentrate a little bit more [on the final].
“We want to finish in the top three or even better – it depends on other results.
“We’ll try to win every every game but if you have guaranteed your position I think it’s always easier.
“Hopefully we can keep winning and everyone will be happy.”
