Chelsea transfers: Romelu Lukaku insists he would be happy to stay and fight for a first-team place at Stamford Bridge next term
Romelu Lukaku insists he would be happy to stay and fight for a first-team place at Chelsea next season.
The Belgium international returns to Stamford Bridge this summer after enjoying an impressive loan spell at West Bromwich Albion, scoring 17 goals in 35 Premier League appearances for the Baggies.
The 20-year-old has been linked with a temporary return to The Hawthorns as well as a loan switch to West Ham United in recent days.
But Lukaku insists that nothing is decided and says he would be prepared to stay and battle his way into contention at Stamford Bridge.
“It’s up to me and it’s up the manager as well. I think I have to first have a conversation and to see what his plans are and then we’ll see from there, but I’m ready to go over there and do my best,” Lukaku told talkSPORT.
“It’s always been my first ambition to play over there but I have to be realistic – I’m 20 years old and I need to play, so we’ll see what will happen.
“I’m very proud to be a Chelsea player. I think I’ve had a very good season on loan so now I will go back over there and show my qualities.
“Hopefully I will stay there but in football you never know, so we’ll see what will happen in the future.”
