Clint Dempsey is expecting a “tough” test when Tottenham host Sunderland in their final Premier League game of the season on Sunday.
Spurs must beat Paolo Di Canio’s Black Cats to have any chance of pipping Arsenal to a top-four finish, with the Gunners a point ahead of their local rivals ahead of their trip to Newcastle.
And Dempsey, who scored Spurs’ opener in their 2-1 win at Stoke City last weekend, is braced for a difficult clash against Sunderland, despite Di Canio’s men having secured their Premier League survival.
“It’s all about what we can control, making sure we get the three points and hoping everything falls into place,” Dempsey told Spurs’ website.
“That’s what our mindset is and that what we have to make sure we go out and accomplish.
“I’m sure Sunderland will be happy they are safe and perhaps sometimes playing without that pressure or fear of relegation will make you play better.
“It will be a tough game and we have to make sure we get the three points and take care of what we can take care of.”
“It shows our character, our fight and that we keep going until the end and that belief and attitude will only help when you try to accomplish the goals you’ve set.”
