Edwin van der Sar: Man United need to be back among Europe’s elite
Edwin van der Sar says the next step for David Moyes and Manchester United is to establish themselves among Europe's elite
Edwin van der Sar believes new manager David Moyes must look to propel Manchester United back among Europe’s elite next season.
The Red Devils suffered a 3-2 aggregate defeat by Real Madrid in the Champions League last 16 in March, with Los Blancos winning 2-1 in the second leg at Old Trafford in controversial circumstances.
Van de Sar, who won the Champions League with United in 2008, says the Premier League clubs have struggled to mix it with Europe’s best in recent seasons.
And the former Netherlands international reckons Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor must look to make United a force in the Champions League next term.
“I think for the whole team the Premier League is always important but the last two years have been disappointing in Europe,” Van der Sar told United’s website.
“So I think the next step for the whole club, and for David, is to establish themselves among the elite in Europe. In five years, we reached three finals, a semi-final and a quarter-final so it would be nice to reach that level again.”
Van der Sar won four Premier League titles, two League Cups and the Champions League during a five-year spell at United after joining in a £2m deal from Fulham in 2005.
