Michael Essien believes his loan spell at Real Madrid has demonstrated that he has “still got it” at the top level ahead of his return to Chelsea in the summer.

The 30-year-old has spent the season at the Bernabeu under former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, making 30 appearances for Los Blancos in all competitions.

The Ghana midfielder, who had struggled with injuries before being shipped off to Spain last summer, is set to return to west London at the end of the season – and he has been pleased with his spell in Madrid.

“I will return to Chelsea with my head up and try to win my place back,” Essien said after Madrid’s Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of Borussia Dortmund.

“I think my loan at Madrid has shown I have still got it at the top level.”

Essien has won two Premier League titles, four FA Cup and a Champions League crown with Chelsea between 2005 and 2012.
