Frank Lampard backs Jose Mourinho to enjoy successful Chelsea return
Frank Lampard is convinced Jose Mourinho would bring more success to Chelsea if the Portuguese coach returns to west London
Frank Lampard is convinced Jose Mourinho would bring more success to Chelsea if the Portuguese coach returns to Stamford Bridge this summer.
The 50-year-old is the overwhelming favourite to take over from departing interim boss Rafael Benítez before next season and return to he club he led to six trophies between 2004 and 2007.
And Lampard, who signed a one-year extension to his Chelsea contract in midweek, would be delighted to see the self-proclaimed Special One return to west London.
“There’s no way he’ll come back and rest on any laurels or rest on anything that happened before,” Lampard said. “With him at the helm we are going to give it a great go.
“It’s no secret he’s an idol for the fans. He’s the greatest manager in our history and he changed the whole belief of the club and made us into a winning club.
“It will lift the fans, and I know it will lift the players. Those who haven’t worked with him before will understand he’ll come in and give them an extra edge. Hopefully that will take us back to being that consistent force.”
The 34-year-old midfielder described Mourinho, who took charge of Inter Milan and Real Madrid since leaving Chelsea in 2007, as the best coach he has ever worked under.
“It is not confirmed yet [but] the idea of working with him is brilliant,” Lampard continued.
“His talent and ability as a manager for me is the best – certainly the best I’ve worked with.
“I think he will take the club on again. He has shown it with Porto, with us, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.”
