ICC Champions Trophy 2013: Ravi Bopara recalled to England squad
ICC Champions Trophy 2013: Ravi Bopara is handed a surprise recall for the ODI series against New Zealand and ICC tournament
Ravi Bopara has been handed a surprise recall for the forthcoming one-day international series against New Zealand and the ICC Champions Trophy.
The 27-year-old had fallen out of favour since Ashley Giles took control of the limited-overs side and it seemed his international career was hanging by a thread.
Despite not playing a ODI since September 2012, Bopara has been selected ahead of fellow all-rounders Luke Wright, Rikki Clarke and Samit Patel.
Bopara’s inclusion may raise some eyebrows but it was the only surprise in the 15-man squad, with Graeme Swann and Tim Bresnan included having returned to fitness after both suffering elbow problems.
With Kevin Pietersen already ruled out, Yorkshire’s Joe Root was unsurprisingly picked while his team-mate Jonny Bairstow will provide Jos Buttler with stiff competition for the wicket-keeper batsman role.
James Anderson, Steven Finn, Stuart Broad and Bresnan make up the pace attack, with Chris Woakes edging out Jade Dernbach and Kent captain James Tredwell provides off-spin back-up to Swann.
ECB selector Geoff Miller feels the series against the Black Caps will prepare the Alastair Cook’s side for the Champions Trophy, which they have strong ambitions of winning on home soil.
“We know that the three match series against New Zealand will be very challenging and we will need to play some very good cricket if we are to repeat the success we had against them earlier this year and build momentum leading into the ICC Champions Trophy,” Miller told ecb.co.uk.
“The ICC Champions Trophy provides this England squad with a great opportunity to win a global 50 over event, something we have yet to achieve, and we are excited to be playing on home soil.
“We are fully aware that with the best eight sides in world cricket competing against each other we will need to play a very high standard of cricket over a three week period to give ourselves a chance of winning the title and we are very much looking forward to the challenge.”
