Jonny Wilkinson: European triumph up there with World Cup win
Heineken Cup 2013: Toulon fly-half Jonny Wilkinson says their European triumph is up there with winning the World Cup in 2003
Jonny Wilkinson claims his Heineken Cup triumph with Toulon ranks up alongside his World Cup success in 2003 and his Six Nations Grand Slam title with England.
Wilkinson kicked 11 points for the French side as they saw off Clermont Auvergne 16-15 in the European domestic showpiece on Saturday.
Fellow England international Delon Armitage crossed in the second half but it was Wilkinson, who put the heartbreak of two previous Amlin Challenge Cup final defeats behind him, who stole the show.
“I’ve been to lots of things with a lot of great people and this ranks up there at the very top,” said Wilkinson, who was part of the 2003 Grand Slam-winning squad.
“It’s written in history. We’ve worked so hard together. It takes everything you’ve got. It’s such a good feeling.
“I’ve been to a few finals and that’s not written up there on the board – you don’t get the big kudos for losing finalist.
“It’s a great thing to go through with an incredibly genuine and fantastic bunch of guys.
“They attacked so well, with such threatening players. We did go back a few yards but kept in there.
“At 15-6, I was saying to the boys ‘one try and we’re back’. We got the penalty and the breakaway try did it for us.”
