Liverpool 0 Everton 0: David Moyes desperate to secure European spot
Liverpool 0 Everton 0: David Moyes says he is desperate to bring back European nights to Goodison Park after the derby stalemate
David Moyes admitted he is desperate to bring back European nights to Goodison Park next season after Everton battled to a point at Liverpool.
In a tight first half, Reds striker Daniel Sturridge resorted to long-range attempts but failed to trouble Tim Howard before narrowly firing wide in the 48th minute after a superb pass by Philippe Coutinho.
Everton looked to capitalise on their set-piece proficiency and Sylvian Distin had the ball in the net in the 54th minute – but the defender’s attempt was disallowed due to a foul on Pepe Reina.
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was denied his 10th Premier League strike of the campaign after a goal-line clearance by Distin as both sides were forced to settle for a draw in the Merseyside derby.
It leaves Everton five points behind Tottenham Hotspur with two games remaining, and Moyes revealed he is desperate to qualify for next season’s Europa League.
“We’ve come a long way to come to compete with Liverpool and it shows how well we’ve done,” Moyes told BBC Sport.
“We’ve done everything we can, the players have given everything they can to win it.
“We want to get Everton back into Europe. As a football club we need desperately to give those nights back to the supporters.
“If we don’t make it, it won’t be for a lack of effort. I think we’ve got more points than any season bar the year we finished in the Champions League.”
