Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho will only get better, says Lucas Leiva
Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva backs Brazilian youngster Philippe Coutinho to keep improving after an impressive start
Lucas Leiva believes Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho will only get better as the Brazilian continues to adjust to the Premier League.
The 20-year-old has made an impressive start to his Reds career after completing a £8.5m move from Inter Milan, scoring two goals and making five assists in 10 league appearances.
Coutinho starred in Liverpool’s 6-0 victory at Newcastle United on Saturday, and Lucas reckons his compatriot will continue to improve as he gets more first-team football under his belt.
“Philippe is a young player but he has got a lot of experience because he spent two years in Italy and six months in Spain so he knows how things work in Europe,” Lucas told Liverpool’s website.
“Of course the Premier League is a different league but he has been fantastic for us since he came.
“For sure, he will only get better because he is very young and works very hard. We are just delighted that he came here and is having the chance to show his quality. That is maybe what he didn’t have in Italy with Inter.”
Lucas also believes that having other South Americans at the club, such as Sebastián Coates, Luis Suárez and the former Gremio man, has helped Coutinho effortlessly adjust to life in England.
He added: “He has settled quickly and has myself, [Sebastián] Coates and [Luis] Suárez to help him feel comfortable and understand a bit more. I’m sure the fans are really looking forward to seeing a full season from him next year just as I am.”
