Steven Gerrard has admitted the “main disappointment” about his shoulder injury is missing Jamie Carragher’s final Liverpool appearance.

The Reds skipper has been ruled out of the club’s final two Premier League games after undergoing an operation on a troublesome shoulder problem.

It means Carragher will skipper Liverpool against Fulham and Queens Park Rangers, and Gerrard admitted he is sad that he will not be playing in the centre-half’s Reds swansong.

“That’s my main disappointment – that I can’t share the last game with him. But it’s always going to be nice to say the last game I played with Jamie was the derby,” he told Liverpool’s website.

“Hopefully he doesn’t put too much weight on over the summer and can join me for my testimonial!”

Meanwhile, Lucas Leiva believes it is fitting Carragher should get the honour of captaining Liverpool in his last two games after a decorated 16-year career.

“He deserves it, really. He has had an awesome career and for I don’t know how many years he has been playing for the first team,” he added.

“He is an example. If you want to succeed as a Liverpool player, you need to really watch him and follow what he does – not just on the weekend, but on a daily basis.

“He is a great professional and the next two games, the armband will be a reward for him for what he has done and he’ll retire on a high.”

Carragher has scored five goals in 735 appearances for Liverpool after making his debut in the League Cup in January 1997.
