Liverpool transfers: ‘Kyriakos Papadopoulos fits the Reds’ profile’
Liverpool transfers: Jan Molby believes Schalke's Kyriakos Papadopoulos would be a good signing for the Reds
Jan Molby has backed Liverpool’s pursuit of Schalke defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos this summer.
Brendan Rodgers is looking to strengthen his centre-half options after Jamie Carragher played his final game for the club in a 1-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers on Sunday.
The 21-year-old, who already has 16 caps for Greece, made nine Bundesliga appearances for Schalke before suffering a knee injury which cut the defender’s season short in November.
“I’m not surprised that Liverpool are hoping to secure the services of Schalke centre-back Kyriakos Papadopoulos this summer,” Molby wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.
“The big Greek defender is as strong as a bull, dominant in the air and very good in one-on-one situations. When I’ve seen him in Champions League matches, I’ve been impressed.
“He hasn’t played since before Christmas due to a knee problem but I’m sure Liverpool will have received reassurances that he has made a complete recovery.
“He certainly fits the profile in terms of the type Liverpool seem to want to build a team around – he’s a talented young player with real potential.”
Rodgers has also been linked with a move for Kolo Toure, and Molby can see the benefits of signing the veteran Manchester City defender.
“I can also see the appeal of bringing in Kolo Toure on a free transfer from Manchester City,” he added.
“I’m sure Toure would understand what his role would be. He wouldn’t be starting every week but there would still be plenty of games for him to take
“When Man City signed him four years ago, most clubs in the world would have taken him at that time. He’s older now but at 32 he still has plenty to offer.”
