Brian Kidd admitted Manchester City have fallen short of their standards after ending the season with a disappointing loss to Norwich City.

Citizens midfielder Jack Rodwell twice restored parity after Anthony Pilkington and Grant Holt had put the Canaries ahead at the Etihad Stadium.

But City – and Rodwell – were unable to conjure a third equaliser following Jack Howson’s superb solo effort midway through the second half.

It was a fitting end for what has been a disappointing season for City, who sacked Roberto Mancini on Monday, and Kidd refused to shed any light on the Italian’s possible replacement.

“It’s been an emotional week with the events at the club. Full credit to the lads, they’ve got stuck and given their best and you can’t ask for any more,” Kidd told BBC Sport.

“I understand the cheers for the boss [Roberto Mancini], he would have been disappointed if there wasn’t for what he did here.

“I don’t know about changes, but the main change will be the appointment of a new manager, whoever that’s going to be.

“I’ve been blessed and been grateful for what football has given me. I was asked to take charge for two games and a tour of America, which has been tough with the boss going. The club make the decisions and you abide by it. I’m a big boy.

“We have fallen short of the standards we set last season, but it hasn’t been for a lack of effort. You defend as a team and attack as a team, so you have to look collectively, but we haven’t reached that consistency.”
