Man United don’t need a new central midfielder, insists Bryan Robson
Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson says the Red Devils aren't in desperate need of a new central midfielder
Bryan Robson says Manchester United do not need to sign a central midfielder in the summer after Michael Carrick’s impressive performances this season.
The Red Devils have been accused of lacking a dominant ball-winning midfielder of the calibre of Manchester City’s Yaya Toure, in spite of their recent domestic success.
But Robson, who won three Premier League titles with United, doesn’t believe the newly-crowned champions are desperately crying out for a new central midfielder.
“To win as many games as they have and be in total command has been fantastic and you have to have a very good midfield to do that,” Robson told Manchester Evening News.
“So when people keep going on about being desperate for a central midfield player – no we are not. We would have been desperate if we hadn’t won the league.
“Then we would have been desperate but we are not.
“But I accept what you are always looking for is something that little bit extra. Can we buy another player who will be outstanding and make us better to help us challenge for all four trophies?
“We have to find players better than what we have in the club. If the boss can find them that is what he will do. It is a lovely balance of young players at the moment who are looking to improve.”
Robson also heaped praise on Carrick, who missed out on the PFA player of the year award, for one of the England international’s best seasons at Old Trafford since arriving in 2006.
“Michael Carrick has had a great season. He has been outstanding. He’s a fantastic player and I really like him,” he added.
“He is such an intelligent player. He is not in the mould of myself and Roy Keane. He is not our type of player. We were forceful and aggressive.
“But Michael has a football brain. He gets in the right areas and reads the game really well.
“He’s been off the radar for a lot of people until this season but he’s won five league titles from seven years at the club that is just fantastic and says all you need to know about him.”
