Michael Carrick says he is very excited by the prospect of working under Manchester United’s new manager David Moyes.

The Everton manager was confirmed as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor on Thursday after the Red Devils boss announced he will retire at the end of the season.

Carrick has won five Premier League titles during a seven-year spell at Old Trafford after Ferguson signed the midfielder in a £14m deal from Tottenham in 2005.

But the West Ham youth graduate admitted he is excited for a new era at the 20-time English champions after Ferguson’s 26-year reign.

“I am very, very excited, very much looking forward to moving on to a new chapter with the club and in my career,” Carrick said.

“David has done an unbelievable job at Everton over a long period of time to keep them up there challenging for Europe. He hasn’t had the money of the top four or five clubs but he has always put a team out there to challenge.

“I am sure he will come here and have a successful time. He will not have to change things overnight because things have gone well of late, but he is his own man and we will all be right behind him as players.”
