Jonny Evans admits he was shocked by Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to stand down as Manchester United manager at the end of the season.

The 71-year-old announced his decision to call time on his 26-year tenure last week, with Everton boss David Moyes swiftly named as the Scot’s successor and will take the reins on a six-year deal on 1 July.

Ferguson handed Evans his United debut in the League Cup in 2007 and defender has gone on to make a further 152 appearances, but the centre-half insists the Red Devils squad did not predict the boss’ retirement.

“A lot was said about rumours flying around during our golf day [on Tuesday] but it wasn’t really like that,” said Evans.

“We came in the next day, a meeting was called and the manager told us he was retiring.

“It was still a shock because no one saw it coming.”

Evans added the Premier League champions are relishing the chance to work under Toffees boss Moyes, who will take charge in the summer after 13 years at Goodison Park.

“Everyone is looking forward to working with David Moyes but are a bit gutted Sir Alex is leaving,” he added.
