Man City’s Joleon Lescott defends under-fire goalkeeper Joe Hart
Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott defends under-fire Citizens goalkeeper and England number one Joe Hart
Joleon Lescott has defended Manchester City’s Joe Hart after the goalkeeper received criticism for a mistake in last weekend’s victory over West Ham.
With City comfortably leading 2-0, Hart was unable to prevent Andy Carroll’s straightforward attempt from creeping through the goalkeeper’s legs and into the net.
Moments earlier, Hart had received treatment for a back injury and opted to continue playing – but it didn’t spare the England international from heavy criticism following his high-profile error.
Hart, who was publicly rebuked by Roberto Mancini earlier this season, has endured a mixed campaign for City but Lescott is adamant the Eastlands outfit have full faith in their shot-stopper.
“The goal against West Ham was down to his back spasm,” Lescott told the Daily Mirror. “Obviously he was disappointed to concede and, knowing Joe, he’ll be gutted for a week now.
“It was one of those things but we have no qualms with Joe at all, at any stage of the season.
“If he made an error, or what he sees as an error, we still won the game 2-1.
“Joe will play it down but I know he really beats himself up about these things.
“He’s on course for the Golden Glove again and he prides himself on that. He’s got 15 clean sheets this season and I know that award means a lot to him.
“He’ll just get his head down in training and try and better himself as he does every week.”
Hart has made 208 appearances for City after completing a £1.5m move to the Eastlands outfit from Shrewsbury Town in 2006.
