Javier Hernández has paid tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson, saying that it was a “blessing” to play under the Scot at Manchester United after he announced his retirement.

The 71-year-old made public his decision to step down at the end of the season on Wednesday after guiding the Red Devils to 38 trophies during his 26 years at Old Trafford.

Mexico international Hernández was brought to the club by Ferguson in 2010 and has since scored 48 goals for United.

And the 24-year-old was full of praise for the departing manager following Wednesday’s announcement.

“When I retire it will be satisfying to say that I was one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s boys,” the striker told TV Azteca.

“But it’s more than an anecdote for me. I see it as an achievement and a blessing. It’s a source of pride to say I was with one of the best coaches in history.

“Something that impresses me is that he never lost his competitiveness. In spite of everything he won he continues to be hungry. He’s a winner.”

David Moyes is understood to be the front-runner to replace Ferguson and an announcement could be made as early as Thursday.
