Wigan Athletic edged closer to relegation to the Championship after Swansea City came from behind to win 3-2 at the DW Stadium.

Roger Espinoza put the Latics ahead before Angel Rangel hit back with a sumptuous volley.

Wigan midfielder James McCarthy then restored his side’s lead but Itay Shechter and Dwight Tiendalli both scored in the final 30 minutes to secure a Swans win.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order to what was a dramatic night in the relegation battle.

Former West Ham striker John Hartson ‏(@JohnHartson10) wants to see the Welsh side win: “C’mon you Swans!! #jackarmy”

Ex-Norwich City striker Darren Eadie ‏(@eadie11) is gutted to see the Latics take the lead: “Oooooooohh dear!!!!!!!! Wigan 1-0. I feel a little sick.”

Another former Canaries legend Darren Huckerby (‏@hucks6dh6) is concerned: “In deep s**t!!!! #ComeOnSwansea … Nerves are shot to bits! #WallopWigan #InDeepS**t”

While ex-Norwich defender Iwan Roberts (‏@iwanwroberts) is flabbergasted as McCarthy puts Wigan back in the lead: “That wasn’t supposed to happen! Well not unless you’re a Wigan fan!”

Former Aston Villa midfielder Ian Taylor (‏@IanTaylor) is keeping all Villains up to date: “Well I never…… #wigan 2 #swansea 2 #relegationwatch #endtoend … Wow!! The defending!!! #Wigan 2 #Swansea 3 #relegationwatch”

Hartson (‏@JohnHartson10) feels sorry for Wigan despite Swansea’s triumph: “Good three points for the Jacks… tinge of disappointment for Wigan would have preferred one of the big boys to go personally… May still happen… By saying bigger clubs I mean the big clubs down the bottom selling their fans short. They shouldn’t be anywhere near the bottom three.. #sham”

Unsurprisingly, Huckerby ‏(@hucks6dh6) is thrilled: “I hope #mcfc beat Wigan 5-0 in the FA Cup on Saturday and we do what’s needed on Sunday #BatterTheBaggies #WallopWigan #PremSurvival”

Injured Swansea striker Michu ‏(@Michuoviedo) is pleased to see his side reach a new landmark: “46!!!”

And his team-mate Wayne Routledge (‏@WayneRoutledge) is also thrilled: “The harder you work, the luckier you get… #46”

England bowler Graeme Swann ‏(@Swannyg66) is thankful to Swansea for helping Newcastle’s cause: “Nice work Swansea #toontoon”

Swans defender Garry Monk (@GarryMonk16) is targeting a top-10 finish: “Great 3 points!! Wasn’t pretty but good desire second half. #stilloncoursefortop10”

And finally, Swansea goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel (‏@GerryTremmel) is glad to make a late contribution to the win: “Happy to get the three points. Strange situation for me again. Coming on late is simply not for me. But we won and thats great. #top10finish”
