Newcastle transfers: Papiss Cisse attracting interest from Russia
Newcastle transfers: Papiss Cisse's agent says the Magpies striker is attracting interest from a number of Russian clubs
Papiss Cisse is attracting interest from a number of Russian clubs, according to the Newcastle United striker’s agent.
The Senegal international endured a barren run towards the end of the season, failing to score in six Premier League games, as the Magpies narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship.
The 27-year-old, who saw his compatriot Demba Ba join Chelsea in the January transfer window, still has four years remaining on his current Magpies deal amid speculation Anzhi Makhachkala are plotting a bid.
“Russian clubs have shown interest in Papiss at the same time, but I don’t want to name the names of the clubs as it wouldn’t be a correct step from me,” said Cisse’s agent Nickolay Guido.
Cisse, who scored 13 goals in 14 Premier League appearances following a £6.75m switch from Freiburg in January 2012, netted the winner against Anzhi in the Europa League last 16 this term.
And the Russian side’s former manager Omari Tetradze believes Cisse would be interested in a switch to the cash-rich Anzhi, who have qualified for next season’s Europa League.
“Anzhi have the advantage that they could qualify for the Europa League and the Senegalese striker’s dream has been to show his qualities in Europe and it doesn’t seem possible with Newcastle in the near future,” he said.
