Coutinho and Sturridge can fire Liverpool into top four, says Gerrard
Liverpool's Steven Gerrard reckons Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge can help fire the Reds to a top-four finish next season
Steven Gerrard has backed Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge to help Liverpool secure a top-four finish next season.
The Reds captain has been thrilled with the impact of Brendan Rodgers’s two January transfer window signings, with the pair scoring a combined nine Premier League goals.
The 32-year-old is confident that both Coutinho and Sturridge will have a big part to play in Liverpool’s future, alongside Uruguay international Luis Suárez.
And while the Reds have left it too late to secure Champions League football this term, Gerrard is confident the Merseyside outfit will be in the hunt for a top-four finish next season.
“I don’t really like jumping ahead but for me there’s a lot of optimism,” Gerrard told Liverpool’s website.
“When you make signings you need to contribute. If they are attacking players, you need them to score and set up goals and be better than we already have.
“Sturridge and Coutinho are both signings for the starting XI, and they can both be even better next season.
“I’m convinced they will be two big players for us.
“And if you add another striker to that and you have Luis coming back, then that’s the firepower we need to be challenging nearer to the top four.
“In fact, if we had got in Sturridge and Coutinho at the start of the season then I think we’d have been right up there among the top four.”
