Rafael Benítez backs Frank Lampard to break Bobby Tambling's Chelsea goal record before the end of the season
Rafael Benítez has backed Frank Lampard to break Bobby Tambling’s Chelsea goal record before the end of the season.
The 34-year-old midfielder is just two strikes away from becoming the Blues’ all-time leading goal-scorer after netting his 201st goal against Swansea City last month.
With his future at the club still unclear, Lampard could only have three more competitive run-outs in a Chelsea shirt in which to attempt to break the record.
Chelsea face Aston Villa on Saturday before next week’s Europa League final against Benfica, and then finish the season at home to Everton.
And Benítez is confident the England international will be able to take the record before the season is out – even if the Spaniard refused to guarantee him more than one start in the remaining three games.
“I have confidence that he will do it,” Benítez said of Lampard, whose contract is set to expire in the summer. “He will play at least one more game and we will wait to see what happens in the other two.
“Frank is a great professional, a very good player. I am really pleased with him because he is training very well every day and his fitness is quite good.
“He will play against Aston Villa and I cannot say anything about the final. We have to play another game and after I will decide the team for the final.
“I will do what I can to win games and at the same time if I can help Frank I will do it.”
