Robin van Persie has revealed his “sadness” at Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to retire but insists it was an honour to work under the Manchester United boss.

The Scot announced this week that he will be stepping down at the end of the current campaign after a stellar 26 years in charge of the Red Devils, with Everton boss David Moyes set to take over from 1 July.

Van Persie, who has only worked under Ferguson for one season after arriving at Manchester United last summer from Arsenal, thanked the 71-year-old for helping him achieve his “dream” of winning the Premier League title.

“I am really sad to hear that the manager Sir Alex is retiring, but I’m really happy I have had the opportunity and the honour to work with him,” Van Persie wrote on his Facebook page.

“He is a great manager and above all even a greater person. I have to thank him for an amazing year and for making my dream come true by winning the league.

“I wish him and his family the very best.”

Van Persie has been a key driving force behind United’s 20th Premier League title success this season, scoring 25 goals in the English top flight since his £24m switch last summer.
