Ruud van Nistelrooy hails Man United’s ‘outstanding’ Robin van Persie
Ruud van Nistelrooy hails Robin van Persie for the impact the Dutch striker had during his first season at Manchester United
Ruud van Nistelrooy has heaped praise on Robin van Persie for the impact the Dutch striker had during his first season at Manchester United.
The 29-year-old was an instant hit at Old Trafford after completing a £24m move to the Red Devils from Arsenal last August.
Van Persie finished the season with the Premier League golden boot, netting 26 goals to help United prise the title back from local rivals Manchester City.
And Van Nistelrooy, who scored 150 goals in 219 games for United between 2001 and 2006, was full of praise for the forward.
“Robin made a massive impact in his first season,” van Nistelrooy told United’s website.
“Right from the beginning. He’s been a great signing and it ended with him winning the league.
“He’s a very good player in general. He scores the goals but, in nearly every goal that United score, he is a part of it with an assist or something else. He adds so much to the attacking play and will be very proud to win his first Premier League medal.
“I think he is definitely an example of a striker who can play the No9 and No10 roles together. He puts the goals in and provides a lot and I think, for a player of that quality, it’s very rare. He is top class.
“Of course, Michael Carrick [who was voted United’s player of the year] had a very consistent season too but I think van Persie’s first season was outstanding.”
