Sir Alex Ferguson has called on Manchester United to “stand by” David Moyes after the Red Devils boss was victorious against Swansea in his final Premier League game at Old Trafford.

Rio Ferdinand popped up with an 87th-minute winner to ensure Ferguson ended his 26-year United reign in style after Spanish striker Michu had cancelled out Javier Hernández’s first-half opener.

The Red Devils have already confirmed that Everton manager Moyes, 50, will take over on a six-year deal at Old Trafford this summer.

And Ferguson – who was afforded time to sort out an under-performing United at the start of his reign, taking six years to win his first trophy – wants his successor to be given a similar chance.

“I’d like to remind you that at the start, the club stood by me, the staff stood by me, the players stood by me and now it is your job to stand by our new manager,” said Ferguson.

He continued: “I have been very fortunate. I have been able to manage some of the greatest players in the country, let alone Manchester United.”

“My retirement doesn’t mean the end of my life with the club. I will now be able to enjoy watching them rather than suffer with them.”

Another United legend, Paul Scholes, confirmed he will also be retiring at the end of the season following 11 Premier League titles and 736 United appearances.

And Ferguson reserved special praise for the former England international after the midfielder’s key role in the club’s domination of English football.

“Before I start blubbing, I want to pay tribute to Paul Scholes who retires today. He is an unbelievable player, one of the greatest players this club will ever have,” he added.

“Paul I wish you a good retirement, though I know you’ll be around, annoying me! And I wish Darren Fletcher a speedy recovery for the club.”
