Theo Walcott admits the current Arsenal squad don’t want to be remembered as the players who ended the club’s Champions League run.

Arsene Wenger’s side have qualified for Europe’s premier club competition in each of the last 15 seasons but are facing stiff competition from north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur this term.

The Gunners moved a point ahead of Spurs and into fourth place after a 4-1 victory over Wigan Atletic at The Emirates on Tuesday as Walcott netted his 21st goal of the campaign.

Wenger’s men travel to Newcastle United on Sunday, and Walcott has urged the Gunners to continue their excellent form which has seen them win eight of their last 10 outings.

“We are aware we could finish third but we just want to win [against Newcastle],” said Walcott.

“That’s our main target. If it happens, great but I want to recover well first and try and get a big win.

“It is big for the future of the club and the players. We have been in the Champions League for the last 15 years and we don’t want to be the players who are not part of that. We know how important it is to the manager and the club itself.

“It is all eyes on the Champions League at the moment for us. We want to keep our form going. We haven’t lost now in a long time. I have lost count to be fair.”
