Thierry Henry: Liverpool’s Jamie Carragher one of England’s best
Arsenal legend Thierry Henry hails Liverpool centre-half Jamie Carragher as one of the Premier League's greatest defenders
Thierry Henry has hailed Liverpool veteran Jamie Carragher as one of the Premier League’s greatest-ever defenders.
The 35-year-old Reds centre-half is set to retire after the club’s final top-flight game of the season against Queens Park Rangers at Anfield on Sunday.
Carragher has racked up 736 appearances for Liverpool, winning the Champions League and two FA Cups during a decorated 16-year career at the Merseyside outfit.
The Liverpool centre-half had some memorable duels against Arsenal’s all-time record goal-scorer Henry, with the former France international notching up nine goals in 16 clashes against the Reds.
And Henry admitted he always relished the “incredible battles” he shared with the Reds legend.
“When Carragher retires, it will be a sad day for any Liverpool fan and for anyone who likes the game,” Henry told LFC TV.
“The memory that I have of him is someone who was loyal and committed.
“You will always remember him as a Liverpool player because that’s the only team he played for.
“I have had incredible battles against him. I lost some and I won some but they were always fair and always hard. He’s a competitor.
“For me, he will go down as one of the top five. If you talk about how long he has played for Liverpool and what he won there and what type of player he was, he will go down as one of the greatest in the history of the league.”
