Tottenham transfers: AVB still confident Gareth Bale will stay
Tottenham transfers: Andre Villas-Boas says failure to qualify for next season's Champions League won't affect Gareth Bale's future
Andre Villas-Boas is confident Tottenham Hotspur’s failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League will not make it harder to keep Gareth Bale at the club.
The 23-year-old PFA player of the year was once again the star of the show as his stunning late winner handed Spurs a 1-0 win over 10-man Sunderland.
That goal was Bale’s 21st Premier League strike of the season and his sensational form has inevitably seen him linked with a transfer away from north London.
But despite seeing his side have to settle for a Europa League spot, Villas-Boas insists Spurs will do all they can to keep hold of their prized asset.
“No I don’t think so [that missing out on the top four will make it more difficult to keep Bale],” Villas-Boas said.
“It’s been an ever-going question. I think he’s absolutely fine.
“We have to keep our ambitions high and hold on to our best players.
“The reference from the points tally is there and so for us to make it better in the future, we need to hold onto the best assets – and this is what I have been told from the top.
“Today was another great moment of individual brilliance [from Bale], although the squad in the second half was really strong.”
