Roberto Martínez admitted avoiding relegation would be like winning the Premier League title for Wigan after securing three points thanks to a stirring comeback at West Brom.

The Latics looked to be edging towards the Championship when Shane Long scored his eighth goal of the season in the 29th minute but Arouna Kone levelled before the break.

Steve Clarke’s men, who are currently eighth, surged into a second-half lead courtesy of Gareth McAuley’s effort, before James McArthur restored parity with a timely header eight minutes later.

And Wigan, who face Manchester City in the FA Cup final next week, secured a vital three points in their bid to beat relegation when Callum McManaman netted with 10 minutes remaining.

It leaves Wigan two points behind 17th-placed Sunderland, with Newcastle United and Norwich a further point clear.

And Martínez was thrilled with the character his side showed at the Hawthorns.

“We have worked really hard for two months to get us in the position where, with two weeks of the season left, we are still involved in two competitions. If we stay up it would be like winning the title,” Martínez told BBC Sport.

“We showed our character and never accepted defeat. To come back twice from behind at a place as difficult as this is huge. To score three goals in open play here is very pleasing and I don’t think anyone else has done that this season.

“Last week we dropped two points [against Tottenham] but we learned from that and showed great composure.”
