Mark Chamberlain believes his son Alex’s best position is behind the striker after the Arsenal forward scored his third goal for England in Sunday’s draw against Brazil.

Oxlade-Chamberlain cancelled out Fred’s second-half opener with a sweetly-struck low volley in the newly re-opened Maracana in Rio.

Wayne Rooney’s 20-yard strike then put the visitors 2-1 up but Roy Hodgson’s men were denied a famous win when Paulinho restored parity late on with a volley following Lucas’s cross.

“I didn’t see it [Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s goal], I was dropping his mother off at the airport at 6am this morning so I fell asleep [while watching],” former England international Mark told BBC Sport.

“It was on tape so I’ll watch it in a minute. I realised when his agent rang me up.

“I was watching the game, it was a bit negative in the first half but England were more positive in the second half and Alex played well in the hole behind the strikers.

“He plays wide right, but that’s his third best position; midfield or playing behind the striker is his best position.”
