Arsenal transfers: Wenger not scared to spend big, insists Gazidis
Arsenal transfers: Arsene Wenger is not afraid to splash the cash this summer, according to Gunners chief Ivan Gazidis
Arsene Wenger is not afraid to splash the cash this summer as the Arsenal manager bids to transform the north Londoners into title challengers, according to Gunners chief executive Ivan Gazidis.
It has been made public that the Frenchman has at least £70m at his disposal this summer to bolster his squad, with Arsenal having been linked with the likes of Stevan Jovetic and Clement Grenier in recent weeks.
Wenger has been notoriously cautious in the transfer market during his time in charge at Emirates Stadium, with last year’s £15m capture of Santi Cazorla currently the club’s record fee.
But Gazidis insists that Wenger is prepared to spend big ahead of the 2013-14 season – as long as it is on the right calibre of player.
“Arsene is not scared to spend money, but he has to believe they are top-class players who will add to the squad,” said Gazidis. “Can I guarantee he will spend all of the money available to him? That depends on the talent.
“Arsene has done an outstanding job to make sure Arsenal stay in the mix with the top teams – not where we want to be, but in the mix – on a relatively limited budget.”
