Ossie Ardiles believes Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuaín can be as a good as Robin van Persie at Arsenal.

The Argentina international is edging closer to a switch to the Gunners after the forward’s agent confirmed the north London side were winning the race to sign the Juventus target earlier this week.

The 25-year-old has been in and out of the Madrid first-team during his six-year spell at Los Blancos, still managing to score 122 goals in 266 appearances in all competitions.

And former Tottenham Hotspur manager Ardiles reckons his compatriot can emulate former Arsenal striker Van Persie if the Madrid star seals a move to Emirates Stadium.

“As good as Robin van Persie? Of course he can be, that’s how good Higuaín is,” Ardiles told Goal.com.

“You remember that when Van Persie arrived he was not exactly, immediately, the best player, it took a bit of time. But he was younger – Higuaín is much more experienced.”

“He’s a top, top player. He will always score goals. He likes to be in the box all the time and he works hard for his team – wherever he goes, he’s going to be great for the team that he’s joining.”
