Arsenal transfers: Hamburg express Johan Djourou interest
Arsenal transfers: Hamburg director of sport Oliver Kreuzer expresses an interest in signing Gunners defender Johan Djourou
Hamburg want to sign Arsenal defender Johan Djourou either on loan or in a permanent deal, according to the club’s director of sport Oliver Kreuzer.
The Switzerland international has been frozen out of the Gunners first-team over the past 18 months and the versatile defender spent the second half of last season on loan at Bundesliga outfit Hannover 96.
Djourou made 16 appearances for the German side, and Hamburg’s Kreuzer expressed the club’s interest in bringing the centre-half to the club in the summer transfer window – either on a temporary or permanent basis.
“We would loan him, but we would also buy him, depending on what Arsenal prefer,” Kreuzer told the Independent.
Hamburg are reportedly facing competition from Hannover to sign Djourou, who has vast experience of both Premier League and Champions League football during his eight years at the Gunners.
And Kreuzer believes Hamburg, who finished seventh last season as opposed to ninth-placed Hannover, reckons the club has more to offer Arsenal’s Swiss defender.
“Hannover played well in Europe last season, but Hamburg is Hamburg,” Kreuzer told the Bild newspaper.
“HSV is HSV, and we are just a better club.”
Djourou has scored one goal in 157 appearances for Arsenal after joining the north London side in 2004.
