Arsenal transfers: ‘Wayne Rooney would be a great success at Gunners’
Arsenal transfers: Alisher Usmanov believes Manchester United's Wayne Rooney would be a "great success" at The Emirates
Wayne Rooney would be a “great success” if the Manchester United striker were to join Arsenal, according to Gunners shareholder Alisher Usmanov.
The 27-year-old’s Red Devils future is currently in doubt after the England international had a transfer request rejected at the end of the season.
Rooney, who scored 12 Premier League goals last season, has been linked with a controversial switch to Arsenal and Chelsea, as well as Paris Saint-Germain.
And Usmanov reckons the former Everton forward would be a great signing for the north London club.
“He is a great player. If he comes it would be a big success for Arsenal and for Rooney also,” said Usmanov.
Arsenal, who finished fourth last season, are on the brink of landing Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuaín in a £22m deal.
And Usmanov, who has a 29.9 per cent share in the north London outfit, issued his backing for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.
“My point of view is that Arsene knows best,” the 59-year-old Russian added.
“Of course, we as shareholders do point out some drawbacks in managing the club, in steering its way through.
“But I believe he is a great coach and he has already proven that last season.”
