Arsenal transfers: Wayne Rooney could be a ‘hero’ for the Gunners
Arsenal transfers: Ray Parlour believes that a move to the Gunners could be just what Wayne Rooney needs to reignite his career
Ray Parlour believes that a move to Arsenal could be just what Wayne Rooney needs to reignite his career.
The 27-year-old has been linked with a switch to Emirates Stadium after it emerged that the striker had a transfer request rejected by United towards the end of last season.
Former Arsenal captain Tony Adams recently questioned whether Rooney would be able to “handle” the off-field distractions that a move to London would bring.
However, ex-Gunners midfielder Parlour is convinced that Rooney would be a top-quality signing for the north London side.
“Wayne Rooney is a quality player and he is at that sort of age where he should have matured now,” Parlour told talkSPORT.
“When you are young, you do things you shouldn’t have done. You just have to learn from it. I certainly did that.
“He might need a change from Manchester United. He is a fantastic player so, if there is anybody of that calibre on the market, I’m sure Arsenal must be looking for him.
“That’s where they have struggled since [Robin] van Persie left. [Olivier] Giroud did OK last season, but they definitely need more firepower.
“It might be a new challenge for him. He can go to Arsenal and become a hero if he bangs in 25 goals. And I promise you they will create lots of chances for Wayne Rooney.”
Rooney scored 12 league goals and made 10 assists, despite being limited to just 22 top-flight starts for the Red Devils last season.
