Andre Villas-Boas has hailed Benoit Assou-Ekotto as an “extremely important” player for Tottenham amid speculation linking the left-back with a transfer away from Spurs.

The Cameroon international struggled to hold down a regular spot in the north Londoners’ first-team last season after missing four months with a knee injury.

The 29-year-old was limited to just 12 Premier League starts last term but Villas-Boas insists that the defender remains an integral part of his squad.

“We finally have Benoit [Assou-Ekotto] back so, apart from the fluid that he has on the knee, he was involved in all of the fixtures since he got back,” said Villas-Boas.

“He’s an extremely important player for us. We have Danny Rose coming back and Zeki Fryers so we have to make the best decision [for next season].”
