British & Irish Lions 2013: Zebo called up as cover for Bowe

British & Irish Lions 2013: Munster wing Simon Zebo is called up to the squad as cover for injured Tommy Bowe

Warren Gatland says Tommy Bowe could still play a part in the British and Irish Lions tour despite calling up Munster wing Simon Zebo as cover.

The Ulster star underwent surgery on a broken bone in his hand after picking up the injury in a 22-12 victory over Queensland Reds on Saturday.

Bowe was originally thought to be out of the Lions’ remaining games but Gatland hinted the 29-year-old could still feature against Australia.

“We will just have to wait and see how the surgery goes,” said head coach Gatland.

“The surgeon says if it goes right, it could be just a couple of weeks.”

Gatland has called up Ireland wing Zebo to his squad as the former New Zealand international
prepares the Lions for their next game against combined New South Wales-Queensland Country.

And the Lions head coach admitted he was happy to see Leinster full-back Rob Kearney back in training as he recovers from a torn hamstring.

“It was good to see him running around yesterday and kicking a ball,” Gatland added.

“Hopefully he is going to play a full part in training and be available for selection.”
