Stuart Lancaster says Billy Twelvetrees has a “great opportunity” after Warren Gatland called up the England international to his British and Irish Lions squad.

The Gloucester star only has five England caps to his name but played in four of the Red Rose’s Six Nations games this spring, earning praise for his promising performances.

The 24-year-old had been touring with England in South America, and Gatland revealed Twelvetrees, who can play at centre and fly-half, would help ease the workload on his back-line due to his versatility.

“The nature of a Lions tour means that there will inevitably be knocks which take time to recover from,” said Gatland.

“The whole squad have worked hard but a lot of the backs have doubled up over the last two games, either starting or from the bench.

“Billy played well in the first Test for England and he provides that versatility to cover a variety of positions.”

Meanwhile, England head coach Lancaster said Twelvetrees had the support of the Red Rose set-up as prepares to take part in his first Lions tour.

“All the England players and management are delighted for Billy to get this great opportunity,” said Lancaster.

“He’s played well for England this year, underlined that form with his display against Argentina at the weekend and goes with our full support and blessing.”
