Warren Gatland heaped praise on the British and Irish Lions for showing “great courage and guts” after a punishing victory over Queensland Reds.

The Lions’ 100 per cent record came under threat in the 17th minute when Luke Morahan produced a superb solo try to give the home side a 7-3 lead.

However, Leicester Tigers scrum-half Ben Youngs scored a close-range touchdown, with Owen Farrell converting, to hand the Lions the lead before half-time.

England international Farrell added two further penalties, sandwiched between Nick Frisby’s try for the hosts, with the Lions securing a 22-12 win.

“I’m pretty happy with that [performance],” Gatland told Sky Sports.

“We missed out on a couple of opportunities in terms of scoring some tries that were very close.

“It was a tough game and the weather conditions in the second half didn’t really help. It was a territory game.

“But I thought we showed great courage and guts.”

In particular, the Lions were put under huge pressure in the opening quarter of the match as Queensland looked to lay the platform for a rare win against the visitors.

And Gatland was thrilled to see his side weather the storm before going on to secure a third successive tour victory ahead of the next match on Tuesday.

“It was tough in the first 20 minutes but that’s what playing for the Lions is all about,” he added.

“They threw everything at us in the first 20 minutes but we soaked up the pressure, so from that regard, I’m really proud of that performance.”

Gatland was dealt a fresh blow with Tommy Bowe suffering a suspected broken finger after Cian Healy and Gethin Jenkins were both ruled out of the tour with injuries.
