British & Irish Lions 2013: Simon Zebo targets playing role
British & Irish Lions 2013: Ireland wing Simon Zebo eyes a Lions starting spot after being called up as cover for Tommy Bowe
Simon Zebo says it’s up to him to force his way into the side after he was called up to the British and Irish Lions squad.
Zebo has been seconded from Ireland’s tour of North America after countryman Tommy Bowe underwent surgery on his injured hand, suffered in the Lions’ victory over Queensland Reds.
The 23-year-old played a key role in helping Munster to the semi-final of the European Cup and also impressed in the Six Nations, scoring a try and making another in Ireland’s solitary win over Wales.
With Bowe remaining with the touring party, Zebo’s selection takes the number of Ireland players in the Lions squad to ten and while he admitted it was a dream come true to get the call-up, he’s desperate to play his part Down Under.
“I’m absolutely over the moon. It is the best news I could ever have dreamed of. As a professional rugby player the ultimate goal is to be a British and Irish Lion,” he said.
“Hopefully I’ll get the chance to do that if I get my cap. That is something I have to work towards now.”
