Warren Gatland insisted he was pleased that his British and Irish Lions side got a “good workout” after the tourists scored nine tries to beat Western Force in Perth.

The New Zealander picked a different starting XV to the side which comfortably beat the Barbarians on Saturday, with Brian O’Driscoll captaining the Lions in the continued absence of injured Sam Warburton.

The skipper scored in the first half along with Jonny Sexton and Tom Croft, while Leinster prop Cian Healy was carried off on a stretcher with a suspected twisted ankle.

The visitors ran riot after the interval as O’Driscoll added his second, while Jamie Heaslip, Tommy Bowe, Manu Vunipola, Owen Farrell and Geoff Parling all scored tries.

With Rob Kearney injured, Leigh Halfpenny cemented his claim for the No15 shirt as he kicked 24 points and finished with a 100 per cent record.

Gatland told Sky Sports: “It was a good workout, particularly for those having their first starts. The guys are still tired by the flight but are getting up to speed quickly with their preparation. But it was good and overall I’m very pleased.

“We talked about keeping our patience and at half-time we talked about being ruthless and finishing them off. We kept our composure and played for 80 minutes. There were a couple of defensive errors but we will work on that and tidy it up.”

The Lions next match is against the Reds on Saturday.
