Cesc Fàbregas has revealed that Vicente del Bosque told him to play in the same position for Spain as he did during his time at Arsenal.

The 26-year-old, who has been linked with a return to Arsenal in recent weeks, impressed in Spain’s 2-1 Confederations Cup win over Uruguay on Sunday.

And Fàbregas, who was handed free role because of the absence of the injured Xavi, felt the positional switch worked in his favour.

“The boss asked me to play freely,” Fàbregas told reporters after the game.

“He knows that when I was at Arsenal that was the position I played in the best, and it worked very well today.

“We played very well, we were very strong in defence and in attack. We had a very good first half.”

Fàbregas made 212 Premier League appearances for Arsenal between 2003 and 2011, scoring 35 goals and notching up 77 assists.
